Massage shows evidence of advanced health benefits

Despite being used the world over for hundreds of years and being a common part of many people's lives, massage is still seen as an alternative therapy: this basically means that its benefits aren't officially recognized by most doctors and it is therefore not something usually recommended by doctors, although physiotherapy that involves massage is.

A massage can be done by anyone but to get the best results and to make sure you are safe all but the most basic massage should be professional massage done by a qualified masseur; still though most professionals are careful about the benefits they promise and relaxation and the easing of aching muscles is usually all that is promised; many believe professional massage can be beneficial in a variety of other ways such as boosting the immune system, relieving stress and boosting the metabolism.

A recent scientific study now means that professional massage could be on its way to becoming an accepted treatment for conditions that would otherwise need to be dealt with using drugs, some of which have side effects or are addictive.
The study done in Los Angeles at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center used two groups of healthy adults to look for changes after they had either had a Swedish style deep tissue professional massage, or a light professional massage.
Both groups had biological changes identified within them but the changes actually differed. In the Swedish massage group volunteers were found to have decreases in the hormones Cortisol and Arginine Vasopressin that itself leads to the release of Cortisol. Arginine Vasopressin is a hormone that among other things increases blood pressure and Cortisolis usually released as a response to stress: suggesting that the volunteers bodies were showing signs of being less stressed following the deep tissue massage. Cortisol also when released can suppress the immune system and so is linked to why people suffering stress may easily become run down, these results suggest that those feeling run down as a result of stress can potentially increase the effectiveness of their immune system through deep tissue professional massage.

As for those volunteers receiving a light massage their results were also interesting; light massage is often associated with relaxation and removing stress: the results from this study suggested that rather than removing stress what is actually happening with a light massage is that contentment is being increased as a result of the hormone Oxytocin being released. Oxytocin acts directly on the brain and it is sometimes known as the 'love hormone' due to the fact that as well as contentedness it acts to bond the person with the person they are with at the time. Oxytocinis released during child birth in most mammals including humans as a way of forming a bond between the mother and child that then lasts. The same hormone is released during sex and increases the bond between partners and may now explain why sharing massage is seen as a romantic activity and often recommended by relationship counselors as it too can increase the bond between a couple.
