A basic emergency kit should include such things as water, food, candles, extra matches, blankets and a radio. Don't forget to stock up on extra batteries. Where you live will also affect what your emergency kit needs are. For instance, If you live somewhere that experiences cold weather, you should have plenty of extra blankets, if you live somewhere very dry, lots of extra water should be a priority.
You should also have a good first aid kit, ready to go and fully stocked. A good first-aid kit should have sterile dressing and bandages, cold packs, tape, scissors, antiseptic wipes, latex gloves, antibiotics, ibuprofen and emergency blankets to help with shock. It should also contain extra prescription drugs you may be need in case you are in a situation where you are on your own for an extended period of time.
A good emergency kit should include some basic tools such as a multi-tool that can provide you with many essential tools like a knife, pliers, saw and screwdriver. Other things that might be useful things like a tarp, duct tape and rope.
During a disaster, emergency services are usually disrupted and are not able to provide help in a timely fashion. This is when it helps to know some basic first-aid techniques like CPR and being able to dress small wounds and burns. These skills are essential and one day could save the life of a friend or loved one.
